Job Description

The Department of Environmental Health Science with the Mailman School of Public Health invites highly motivated candidates to apply for Postdoctoral Research Scientist position. The post-doctoral research scientist will contribute to our characterization of the neurotoxicity of electronic cigarette aerosols and their potential role in causing the neurodegenerative disorder Parkinson's disease.

In this project, the post-doctoral scientist will:

  • Culture and differentiate induced pluripotent stem cells into dopaminergic neurons.
  • Expose these cultures to electronic cigarette aerosol to determine the respective neurotoxicity of metals, aldehydes and nicotine that are all present in the aerosol.
  • Chronically expose mice to electronic cigarette aerosol and determine longitudinally the consequences on their cognition and motor abilities. At endpoint determine whether the animals developed a neurodegenerative phenotype resembling Parkinson's disease.

The post-doctoral fellow will contribute to the supervision of a technician B, as well as practicum and rotating students.

Responsibilities:

  • Carry out bench experiments in the laboratory (70%).
  • Execute data analysis, experiment planning, literature search and paper writing (20%).
  • Perform related duties & responsibilities as assigned/requested (10%).


Minimum Qualifications:

A PhD degree in a field related to neuroscience, medicine, environmental health sciences. A training in neuroscience and biochemistry/cell biology techniques Experience with rodent handling, behavior and dissection Advanced knowledge in induced pluripotent stem cell differentiation into neuronal cells.

Preferred Qualifications:

Knowledge in adult-onset neurodegenerative disease pathogenic mechanisms

Experience in metal exposure and toxicity
