TITLE: Digital Literacy Intern
LOCATION: Elizabeth, New Jersey
DURATION: 15-20 hours a week, 3-4 months minimum starting June 2024

BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world's worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in over 40 countries and 26 U.S. cities to restore safety, dignity and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm to home.

SCOPE OF WORK: The IRC in New Jersey seeks interns to support digital literacy learning among recently arrived adult refugees and immigrants who have fled persecution in their home country and are rebuilding their lives in New Jersey. The intern will assist the Education and Learning manager and adult education coordinator to support computer lab inventory, digital literacy workshop instructions, and assist clients with internet services applications.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintain the computer lab and inventory of technology equipment.
  • Set up new laptops for clients.
  • Support clients for the internet applications and troubleshoot issues with the internet company.
  • Facilitate small to large group basic digital literacy workshops using provided curriculum.
  • Design customized lesson plans based on provided curriculum for student- centered learning activities.
  • Create a welcoming environment that fosters community and learning among program participants while interacting with diverse population.
  • Record attendance and prepare lesson materials effectively.
  • Other administrative work assigned.
  • Willing to travel to Elizabeth for in-person instructions and onsite work.
Minimum Qualifications:

DESIRED QUALITIES:

  • Experience teaching ESOL/EFL to adults in group settings.
  • Experience working with adult students from a variety of backgrounds, including those with limited formal education and/or literacy skills.
  • Excellent classroom management skills and confidence facilitating both large and small groups.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment.
  • Reliable, responsible, and dedicated to the position until the end of the session.
  • Fluency or familiarity with Spanish, Arabic, Pashto, Dari, Haitian Creole, or Swahili is a bonus, but not required.

This position reports to the Adult Education Coordinator and Education and Learning Manager.
