Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Laboratory Manager.

In this role, the successful candidate is responsible for overseeing the day to day management of the Laboratory including but not limited to operational management, quality assurance, staffing, workflows, timekeeping, technician training, equipment maintenance, vendor agreements, etc. Utilize knowledge of animal handling, molecular and cellular biology to conduct and oversee laboratory projects. Partners with the PI and Department Administrator to consult on areas for improvement, compliance, financial performance, marketing initiatives, strategic planning, etc. Strictly adhere to the requirements NYU Langone Medical Center, IACUC compliance, NYC Fire Codes, in addition to State, Federal and other regulatory agencies.

Job Responsibilities:

    • Manages the day to day operations of the Laboratory which includes participation in animal research (mice)
    • Assists with special projects related to the laboratory or other duties as assigned by the Principal Investigator
    • Covers as needed or in the absence of any technical staff.
    • Develops and fosters communication throughout the lab personnel to facilitate problem-solving, decision-making and collaborative efforts.
    • Acts appropriately in prioritizing and coordinating responsibilities and duties to ensure smooth operation of the laboratory.
    • Responsible for the overall environment and collaborates with Facilities Management and Environmental Services for any issues affecting the physical environment and operation.
    • Supervises research staff and students as directed by the Principal Investigator.
    • Participates in cost control activities by seeking the most effective method of conducting research for the projects in the laboratory
    • Monitors daily compliance and oversees annual N.Y.C. Fire Department inspections and any other required laboratory safety inspections.
    • Develops and implements laboratory operating policies and procedures including the laboratorys quality control program and adheres to regulatory requirements. Maintains relevant records consistent with regulatory standards.
    • Evaluates staff, including interviewing perspective candidates, conducting performance evaluations, investigating and documenting disciplinary actions, identifying areas for improvement and identifying or devising programs necessary for staff development and enhancing the capabilities of the laboratory. Coordinates in-service training for all laboratory staff.
    • Appropriately trains staff including cross-training in other areas of the laboratory to ensure appropriate knowledge, skill set and coverage of all areas within the laboratory. Maintains comprehensive training records.
    • Assigns responsibilities, establishes schedules, and monitors staff use of time including vacation, sick and overtime. Maintains detailed written records of daily staff assignments in order to facilitate resolution of problems. Prepares daily laboratory workflow logs.

Minimum Qualifications:

To qualify you must have a BS, MS or MA degree with a major in one of the chemical, physical or biological sciences with a minimum of five years of experience and/or prior managerial and lab supervisory experience.

Knowledge of molecular and cell biology laboratory equipment and procedures used in all aspects of the laboratory including histology and immunohistochemistry, nucleic acid isolation and detection, cell culture, and small animal handling. Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and solve complex problems. Ability to work independently without supervision.

Ability to manage a heavy workload, demands on time and resources and prioritize effectively. Effective oral, written, communication skills is required. Must be knowledgeable about computers and basic computer software (e.g., Word, Excel, etc.). Must communicate effectively with supervisors and peers.

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York state Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $81,325.15 - $118,300.00 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
