The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

The Arthur W. Diamond Law Library at Columbia Law School welcomes applicants to submit their interest in the Library Assistant position available in the Law Library Circulation department. The Library Assistant V assists with access services functions of the Law Library. The primary responsibilities of this position include assisting patrons, performing circulation functions in an integrated library system, and providing excellent customer service. The Library Assistant V is also expected to communicate clearly and courteously, in person and virtually. This position requires knowledge or willingness to learn complex systems such as TIND, CLIO, Lawnet, and Voyager.

Responsibilities

  • Circulation:
    • Perform circulation desk procedures, including assisting patrons with directions and referrals and
      monitoring the borrowing of materials.
    • Focus on customer service best practices when working with library patrons, including law school
      faculty, staff, and students.
    • Perform complex functions in the integrated library system (TIND), including checking in and
      out material and equipment, registering patrons, and performing basic inventory and maintenance
      tasks.
    • Assist with access services functions, which may include the physical processing of books,
      games, and other library materials; interlibrary loan and document delivery processes; preparing
      and maintaining course reserves; or maintaining and processing the looseleaf collection.
    • Assist students with making study room appointments; inform and explain reference services, and
      provide contact information.
  • Back office:
    • Perform inventory; verify proper location of books and shelf read in accordance with Library of
      Congress Classification. Search for misplaced items; retrieve books as requested; and place books
      and other materials in their proper location to facilitate use.
    • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma and/or its equivalent and six months relevant experience required.
  • Strong communication skills are required, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work accurately with names, numbers, codes and/or symbols.
  • Computer literacy and proficiency in Word processing and Excel are required.
  • Strong service orientation.
  • Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others
  • Ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to maintain a consistent work schedule.
  • Ability to work evenings and/or weekends as business needs dictate.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Library experience is strongly preferred.
  • Foreign language proficiency preferred.
