Posting Summary
A Postdoctoral Research Associate position is available in the Panettieri laboratory in the Rutgers Institute of Translational Medicine and Science at Rutgers University-New Brunswick. The Panettieri lab examines signal transduction mechanisms modulating airway tone in the context of asthma, COPD, and fibrotic lung diseases. The successful candidate will focus on understanding how exposure to environmental factors and respiratory pathogens contribute to changes in airway function, perform detailed duties and responsibilities described below, will have an excellent work ethic, and be both motivated and productive. Position is contingent upon funding.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Planning and executing research projects as assigned.
  • Preparation of high-quality manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals, as well as data for research conference presentations.
  • Provide supervision and guidance to junior staff, undergraduates, and graduate students.
  • Securing extramural funding during the postdoctoral training.
  • Cell Culture work: media preparation, quality control testing, and daily maintenance of human airway muscle cell lines & human fibroblast cell lines.
  • Protein work: Protein isolation, immuno-precipitations, & western blotting.
  • Molecular Biology work: RNA/DNA isolation & purification, PCR & real time PCR, transfections, etc. Immunofluorescent staining.
  • Performing ELISAs.
  • Responsible for maintaining all certifications, laboratory protocols, and experimental write ups.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • The applicants should have a Ph.D. degree in one of the following fields: biology, cell biology, pharmacology, molecular biology, or other related fields and at least 0 to 2 years of laboratory research experience.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Research experience in dissecting/understanding cellular signal transduction utilizing primary human cell lines.
  • Clear evidence of scientific productivity.
  • Expertise in performing basic scientific assays including: RNA/DNA extraction, and protein preparation, PCR & real time-PCR, western blot analysis, ELISA are essential.
  • A strong background in cell and molecular biology, and tissue culture are a prerequisite for this position.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, clear evidence of scientific productivity, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team are required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Candidates with pulmonary research experience are preferred.
  • Experience in understanding big data analysis (RNAseq, mass spec/phosphoproteomic analysis, etc) and pathway analysis are a plus, but not required.
Equipment Utilized
  • Tissue culture hoods and incubators, centrifuges, electrophoresis apparatus for proteins and nucleic acids, electroporator, gentleMACS Octo Dissociator, flow cytometry, multimode plate reader, thermal cyclers, nanodrop, light, confocal, and fluorescent microscopes, histopathology processor, embedding center, microtome, cryostat, and vibratome, ELISA plate washer, ELISA plate reader, ddPCR, qPCR, and other equipment as needed.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Standing, sitting, walking, speaking and hearing. No special vision requirements. Ability to lift or exert force up to 25 pounds.
  • Biosafety Level 2 and 2+ laboratory environment working with human and animal fluids and tissue.
  • Requires safety training.
  • Will be exposed to chemicals.
  • Handle controlled substances such as pharmaceutical, radiological or hazardous materials.
